The Flaming Lips!

The Flaming Lips show last night at the Molson Ampitheatre was one of the most colourful and confetti-ridden experiences I have ever seen. Here's a poster I picked up at the show:



Upon buying the poster I didn't realize that it was promoting The Flaming Lips' rendition of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Can you blame me with the wierd font that they used on this poster? The show was really cool, but I think Wayne Coyne spent too much time introducing each song before launching the venue into psychedelia.

The Rockit!

Only a few brave souls know the legend of the short-lived Toronto venue called The Rockit.

I remember going to the Rockit a few times in 2004 when I was just starting to watch bands in live venues. I thought the place was pretty cool, but I soon learned that it was one of the grimiest, low quality venues to ever exist. The venue was promoted as a "three floor punk rock mecca." Okay, I'm exaggerating a bit here, because the "second floor" was a small standing area before going up to the balcony. The only think I remember about this venue other than it's "three floors," was it's tiny stage.

This stage looked like it was held together by duct tape, and could rarely fit a band comfortably. I remember bands regularly complaining that the stage was too small. The Rockit closed down after only a few years of operation. The building is now a Spring Rolls restaurant with no evidence that a scuzzy rock club ever existed.

You can see me in this photo to the left in the skull t-shirt. I was really into mosh pits around this time, as this photo confirms. This photo does not really do any justice to how small and crappy the stage was.

I do remember that the band playing was an Iron Maiden cover band, and I loved every minute of it.

In the future I plan to make a post about a similarly crappy venue in Mississauga known to it's patrons as "The Lodge."

Muse!

So I just finished watching the new Rush documentary Beyond The Lighted Stage and it got me thinking about similar musical trios who rock. The only one that readily came to mind was Muse.

I first heard about Muse around the Absolution era. I'm kicking myself now because I didn't seem them in 2003 when they played a really small venue in Toronto. When Black Hole and Revelations came out in 2006 I missed a second opportunity to see them because I didn't listen to the new album yet. After listening and getting blown away by Black Hole and Revelations I saw Muse in 2007 and loved their live show.


I started to like Muse so much that I bought the special of their 2009 album The Resistance. Although The Resistance doesn't stack up against some of Muse's earlier albums (it's still pretty good), I was happy to get an exclusive poster with The Resistance special edition.



This is the kind of poster (or photo more correctly) that was made to be framed. I intend to frame it very soon, along with a lot of other posters laying around ...

How To Destroy Angels!

My How To Destroy Angels poster finally came in after waiting for a few weeks:



The poster is made of a cardboard-like paper with little perforations. It feels really high quality, I wouldn't expect anything less from Trent Reznor.

Metallica!

Metallica have had their fair share of problems throughout the years. Cliff died, Jason left, and Lars alienated a lot of fans by leading a crusade against Napster in the late 1990s. Check out this video for a slice of Metallica in their prime:

What is Pop Punk?

When you ask the average music fan what bands they would classify as "pop punk" you might get answers like: Blink 182, New Found Glory, Jimmy Eat World, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Bowling For Soup and possibly many more. When you ask a devoted fan of "pop punk" what bands they are listening today you might get answers like: Four Years Strong, Set Your Goals, Fireworks, and many more that the average music fans has never come across.

I've been going to see some of the new up-and-coming pop punk bands who play in Toronto, and from what I have heard these groups are a lot more "heavy" than the pop punk bands of yesteryear. Here is a Set Your Goals promotional poster I got at a pop punk show in Toronto:



The design is a little too busy for my liking, but the band is great and the poster was pretty cheap. In the interest of full disclosure I'll end the post here because I don't really know too much about pop punk in 2010. Check out my friend's blog that is far more superior in this regard:

The Social Network!

When I first heard about a movie coming out about Mark Zuckerberg and the founding of Facebook I was a little discouraged. When I heard that Justin Timberlake was set to act in the film (I will never forgive him for his role in The Love Guru) I was almost certain it would totally suck.

But now The Social Network cloud has a silver lining because Trent Reznor and famed producer Atticus Ross have signed on to compose the film's musical score. I'm a huge fan of Reznor's because he always talks straight to his fans and keep them in the loop on all of his music endeavors. In a recent post on nin.com Reznor said The Social Network is "really f*** good, and dark!" That's just about all the convincing I need to totally rethink my perception of The Social Network. Also, the film is directed by David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club), which is another reason why I think it might be good after all.

Even if The Social Network is not that good it will undoubtedly be better than The Love Guru ...

A few weeks ago I ordered a poster for Reznor's new band How To Destroy Angels. When it comes in I will post it here to keep my news + poster posting style going on for realio' yo!

This is a little different than the stuff I usually post, but it is frickin' hilarious.

Even though there is nothing to this dance (other than a waging wang) I could see it catching on.
